Are darker shades recommendable for hallway rugs?

I want to spice up our hallway. I've been thinking about buying a rug to make our hallway space more interesting to look at and walk through. The space gets a lot of light from the windows at the front of the house. I think I want to contrast this with a dark rug for an interesting visual effect. Are darker shades recommendable for hallway rugs?

Choosing a darker color for your hallway is the more practical choice, since this areas is a high traffic area, essentially because it won't show the dirt as quickly, since this space is susceptible to dirty shoes, paws, or whatever else you bring through your home on a daily basis.
