Are earth-toned rugs ideal to blend indoor and outdoor living for a Mediterranean look?

We recently added a patio to our house for entertaining friends and family. My husband likes how the space looks, but I'm unsure. I want to blend our outdoor and indoor spaces seamlessly, but I'm not sure how. My sister suggested trying vinyl rugs, and I would like to know if earthy colors are appropriate for this.
