Is it a good idea to place a premium vinyl table runner on a hall table?

My house has a long hallway, and I recently got a hall end table to break it up and give it more character. I'm looking for a way to add a key holder bowl to my hall end table to make it more functional. Placing the bowl on an empty table seems strange. Can I cover the table with a premium vinyl table runner?
