How much space should be left between a wall and a tile rug?

I saw a picture in an architecture magazine of a hallway with a tile rug. Needless to say, I thought it was stunning and now I want one in my apartment! My hallway tiles are white and I want my tile rug to be a dusty rose. However, I don't know how much space I need to leave between the tile rug and the two walls running alongside it. Is there a rule of thumb?

There is an old standard for the distance between the edge of a rug and the wall: There should be about 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the wall. You can apply this rule to your area rug as well, though you can take away or add a few inches. Remember that you have to keep enough of a gap between your tiles to account for grout: about 1/8th of an inch, but you may want a larger or thinner gap depending on the tiles you’re using.
