Joining Two Rugs Together—Can It Be Done?
Joining two rugs can be an excellent solution if you can't find a rug in a large enough size. How is this done? Read on for a fail-safe step-by-step guide.

Having a rug that is too small for your space can make the room seem a lot smaller. However, oversized rugs are far more expensive, and sometimes the rug you like simply doesn't come in the size you want.
You may have heard of people joining two rugs together to create an area rug of a specific size. Is this a good idea, and if so, how can it be done?
Why Should You Join Two Rugs Together?
Joining two rugs together allows you to create the exact look you want and cover a larger floor area. Entryway rugs, for example, may need to be narrower or longer than standard store sizes.
It also tends to be more economical to join two smaller rugs than to purchase one area rug.
How Do You Join Two Rugs Together?
- We recommend buying two identical rugs for the most cohesive look. New is preferable, as two used rugs are likely to have worn differently.
- It's far easier to join two rugs that are one solid color than trying to line up patterns. So if you're in doubt, opt for the former. Dark colors are also more forgiving and don't show the seam as much as lighter tones. The same goes for textured rugs over rugs with a flatter pile or smoother texture.
- If you want to use patterned rugs, lay them next to each other on the floor to get a picture of how they should fit together, and carefully line up the pattern. It is very easy to spot misaligned motifs.
- You might need to cut off the tassels along a joining edge to achieve a longer runner-like rug. Use a very sharp cutter to ensure a clean edge.
- Be sure to measure very carefully and accurately mark your measurements before you start cutting.
- By using special adhesive tape, you can join the rugs. How-to videos are readily available on the internet.
- All that's left to do is decide on the perfect placement for your new rug and enjoy your handiwork!
You Can Connect Two Rugs
The type and size of the rugs and the desired result determine how to join them. Rug tape or adhesive is a popular way to secure rug edges. To avoid tripping hazards or unsightly gaps, make sure the rugs are aligned and the seams are secure. Joining two rugs can create a larger, more uniform floor covering with a little patience and effort.
