Can worn out premium vinyl rugs be recycled?

The premium vinyl rug in my parents' home has seen better days. They want to throw it away, but I am worried that this could damage the environment. I know that vinyl contains high volumes of plastic and chlorine, and I'm worried that this could break down into the environment. Is it possible that a premium vinyl rug can be recycled?

You are right to worry about the damage the rug can do to the environment. Vinyl isn't biodegradable and should be handled properly. However, despite most people's fears, vinyl can be recycled.
