Are vinyl rugs and tiles durable for several years?

My husband and I are renovating our home. We want to replace the flooring in our living room with vinyl tiles, and add a vinyl rug in our entryway. First and foremost, we want to know how durable vinyl is. Is it the kind of flooring that we can have for years before needing to replace it?
