Can I use my premium vinyl trivet as a design piece for my dinner table?

My husband picked up a large dining table to accommodate more people during the upcoming Christmas season. I enjoy serving food and allowing it to cool at the table. I've considered buying tableware that is both attractive and functional. For this, a friend suggested that I try premium vinyl trivets. Can I use a premium vinyl trivet as a table centerpiece between meals?
