It can often be quite difficult to furnish and decorate open concept living rooms to feel welcoming and homely. Area rugs are a great way to give open-plan living rooms more character and create an intimate atmosphere.
The Different Sizes of Area Rugs in Open Concept Living Rooms
There are several sizes of area rugs that can work well in open concept living rooms. The area rug you choose depends on the decorating approach you take.
Here are the most common sizes you’ll probably choose from:
- 3′ x 5′
- 9′ x 12′
- 12′ x 15'
How to Choose the Right Sized Area Rug for Your Open Concept Living Room
In many cases, it’s easy to determine the right size area rug—all you need to do is measure the walls. But with an open concept living room, it’s not as straightforward.
Instead, what you want to do is create different little areas within the open space. Those areas are given their own area rugs, and they should be measured accordingly.
Here’s how you’ll choose a rug size, depending on the size of the area:
Area size Rug size
5′ x 7′ 3′ x 5′ 7′ x 10′ 5′ x 8′ 10′ x 12′ 8′ x 10′ 11′ x 14′ 9′ x 12′ 14′ x 17′ 12′ x 15'
If you don’t think this approach will work for you, then mix different sizes in different areas until you figure out a good combination. Choose a large area rug for the sitting area and a smaller one in front of a window or the fireplace, for example. The most important thing is that you allow yourself to be creative when placing your area rug so that you enjoy decorating your open concept living room.
