A rug under a table adds warmth, comfort, and luxury and defines the dining area. It also adds to the overall design style of the room. A rug under the table will protect the floor underneath against scratches from the chairs, wear and tear from shoes, and any messes or spills.

How Far Should a Rug Stick Out From a Table?

The table and all chairs need to fit onto the rug, with a sizeable border around them. Ideally, the rug should be four feet wider and longer than your table so that chairs stay on the rug when they are pushed back from the table. In other words, your rug should be 18–24 inches larger than all sides of the dining table.

What Size Should a Rug Under a 4-Seater Table Be?

The dimensions of a standard four-seater table are 48 inches by 36–40 inches. If we apply the above guidelines, the ideal rug size would be 84–96 inches long and 72–88 inches wide. Using more standardized rug sizes, the best size for the rug would be 5 x 8 ft.

When deciding on the size of your rug, keep in mind that there should also be at least 24 inches of space between the outer edge of the rug and the wall or the next large item of furniture, like a couch or server.
