A standard king bed is 76 inches wide, so choosing a rug that’s not much wider than that will lead to the rug being swallowed up by the bed. Where’s the fun in that? Your rug should measure 112 to 124 inches (about ten feet) wide for a good look and feel.

Best Rug Sizes for a King Bed

A king bed comes standard at a length of 80 inches—and when you consider the wall, you only need a rug about 8-9 feet long. The rug only has to extend between 18 to 24 inches beyond the foot of your bed.

Add to that a width of 10 feet, and you need a rug of 8 x 10 feet at least. You can go bigger, of course.

Bigger rooms will look better with larger rugs of about 9 x 12 feet; you won’t likely need anything bigger than that.

How to Place a Rug Under Your King Bed

Since there are two ideal rug sizes, we’ll look at how to place them under your king bed.

  • 8 x 10 Rug Don’t place your nightstands on the rug so that you can show off more of it. You’ll also be able to place a bench or footlocker at the foot of your bed.
  • 9 x 12 Rug This is the perfect size for a large room. You can place your nightstands on a rug like this and still have enough of it show to look appealing in your bedroom, aligning with feng shui best practices.
