Does vinyl wallpaper protect against mold?
Asked 2 years ago
The wallpaper that I currently have in my bathroom is not doing so well at guarding against mold. I heard that vinyl is washable and water resistant, which means that it can be cleaned easily. I want to get premium vinyl wallpaper so that it lasts a long time. The main concern, however, is whether the wallpaper will be able to resist mold and other microbial growth. The bathroom tends to get humid in the summer.

Wallpaper, even vinyl, is not a great idea since it can trap the moist air and become as a source for mold. Unfortunately, once mold is in the walls (especially damp and humid areas like the bathroom), it's hard to get rid off without treating properly. But applying mold inhibiting paint before wallpaper is ideal if this if you want wallpaper in your bathroom.

Wallpaper, which includes vinyl wallpaper, can trap moisture-laden air and serve as a moisture source for mold. This is especially possible in bathrooms and kitchens. Before installing wallpaper, apply a coat of acrylic primer as it provides protection against moisture absorption. If you already have affected areas, treat them with mold remover as soon as possible.
