How can I protect exposed wooden patio furniture from the elements?

My wife bought wooden patio furniture for our new home, but I'm concerned because our patio isn't covered. Are there ways to protect the furniture or make it look more pleasant?

The traditional and catch-all way to protect your wooden patio furniture from the elements is to use a marine spar varnish. This protects it from rain and also from ultra-violet sun rays, but changing the location of the furniture, covering it and keeping it clean also works.
