How durable is handmade wooden furniture?

My husband and I are expecting. My grandfather made us a handmade pine rocking chair for our daughter's nursery. I have my doubts about the strength of the chair, but I like how it fits the rustic design and the rug we got. How durable is pine furniture?

Pine is a durable and popular wood, but any wooden furniture must be maintained with a good varnish, or regular cleaning and oiling. Pine wood has a distinctive yellow color which you might want to paint over to match your nursery color scheme. Choose an eco-friendly  all-in-one paint that provides a wipe-clean finish - nurseries do get messy - and be sure to paint the chair thoroughly, especially where any joints or edges are reachable. Your rocking chair should last into your own old age, if you treat it right!
