Are premium vinyl trivets inexpensive options to protect my countertop from scratching and scuffing?

Asked a year ago

I just moved into a new apartment with laminate countertops. I enjoy cooking with heavy cast iron pots and skillets, but I'm always afraid of scratching and scuffing the finish if I place them directly on the countertops. I'm looking for an inexpensive option to protect the finish and give me peace of mind. Are premium vinyl trivets an excellent option for me?

Although this sounds like a great idea, heavy cast iron pots and skillets (and even the non-cast iron kinds) can get really, really hot. Typically, they start warping at 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius) and can melt at temperatures exceeding 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius). Putting hot pots and skillets on them can lead to trouble. Silicone trivets are a much better option because they don't conduct heat.
